Description: Axiophilus, or, Oxford alias Shakespeare Author: Clark, Eva Turner Title: Axiophilus, or, Oxford alias Shakespeare Publication: New York: The Knickerbocker Press, 1926 Description: Hard Cover. Very Good. x, 37 pp. 21.5 x 16.5 cm. Dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt titling to cover. Faint sunning to spine, with some light rubbing to spine ends and corners of boards. Some mild offset toning from two newspaper clippings and an engraving, which are laid in. The two clippings are from a 1988 article from an unknown San Francisco newpaper which reported on a mock trial that determined that Shakespeare was the true author of 'Hamlet', 'The Tempest', and 'Measure for Measure'. The engraving, which has mild to moderate foxing, is a portrait (engraved by W. Sharp and published in 1789) of Henry Wriothesley, the Earl of Southampton, who was a patron of Shakespeare and was the dedicatee of both 'Venus and Adonis' and 'The Rape of Lucrece'. The interior is otherwise clean and unmarked, and the binding sound.
