Description: The title comes from a stage direction in the first act of Hamlet, when his fathers ghost refuses to answer questions and then disappears. The novels protagonist Nathan Zuckerman, elderly and debilitated by prostate surgery, is also leaving the stage. Although Philip Roth died in May 2018 before production of this edition was underway, it was understood that the illustrations would be chosen from the work of his old friend, R. B. Kitaj. Details from thirteen paintings are reproduced in color and were chosen for their resonance with themes in the novel.
