Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This extremely rare and unique cradle dates to circa 1790 – 1810 and is the earliest pottery cradle known to exist. Although not signed, this unique glaze decoration is attributable to Pratt Ware made during this period. These cradles came to be made to be given as christening gifts. This is molded as a woven basket weave cradle and is decorated with red, blue and black glaze. The inside of the cradle is glazed white, you can see where the potter’s thumb smeared some of the white glaze. The cradle was molded in two pieces and the halves pressed together prior to firing. There is a small spot of missing clay on the rim that was glazed over in firing. Measuring 5 ½” long by 3 ¼” in height this cradle is a survivor. These were likely played with by children and most were badly damaged and discarded. This has chips on the base of the cradle from rough use. This is an extremely rare piece of early yellow ware that would be prized by any advanced collector.
