Description: ‘I Gave Gold for Iron’. A super rare matching pair of Berlin Iron wedding bands dating to 1915 Germany. Made of solid 14 carat gold, they have a heart of iron. They’re engraved ‘Gold Gab Ich Für Eisen 1914 OSK’ to this central section as the happy couple had their rings made in iron instead of gold to donate to the war effort of WWI. This had been a practice since it was introduced by Napoleon one hundred years before that, and became fashionable to support the fatherland in this way. It appears after the war they lined the rings in gold to incorporate the originals in a charming and unique way. Each is ornately hand engraved to the inside with an extremely special and heartfelt personal message and in this way are also posy rings. The larger reads: ‘Fest wie Eisen, Treu wie Gold Anny 26.I.15’ (Strong as Iron, Faithful as Gold), and the smaller ‘Meinem Goldi gab ich eisen 26.I.15' (I gave my Goldi Iron). Anny and Goldi appear to be the nicknames of the couple, and the name Sandor is present on the smaller - giving us Anny and Sandor. Their probable wedding date of 26th January 1915 is commemorated within both. Not only are these historical matching pieces representative of loyalty, patriotism and constance, the contrast between the metals both in their nature and their aesthetic gives a unique and handsome appearance. What’s more, it appears they were made as custom pieces this way from new - normally Berlin Iron items had been exchanged for their gold counterparts to be melted down. A true unique, museum quality pair. They’re in sizes 8.5 and 6.5, weigh 8.0 grams together and are 8 and 7 mm wide.
