Description: This is a truly unique necklace. This necklace features perfectly matched 10- 12K yellow gold beads from one side to the other. This necklace originates from the Philippines. It dates from the mid to late 1800s. The beads are so unique and hand crafted. They feature big tamburin beads called "granada" or pomegranate. They have been restrung and are very sturdy to wear often with out worry. The beads feature a spring clasp at the center plaque, which is an obvious replacement Clasp. The center plaque is flat and hand etched on both sides. It suspends the fabulous three dimensional locket. The locket features heavily hand worked reprose' work. The center of the locket features on one side a star under glass and the opposing side is unrecognizable with deterioration. I have not tried to remove the glass frames as I like to keep things original as possible. This is a super unique work of old craftsmanship wearable art. The condition of this necklace is very good with a couple of beads having wear, but nothing major, no major indentations. There are no hallmarks to be found but tests as at least 10K - 12K solid gold. "During the Spanish colonization of the Philippines which began in 1521, jewelry such as crucifixes were used as tools to replace amulets and talismans worn then by the native Filipinos. To the converted Filipinos, wearing these jewelry was not only a declaration of their Christian faith but also a way to adorn themselves while still following the austerity restriction dictated by the Spanish regime. The goldsmiths saw an opportunity to hawk their wares by producing only religious jewels. While gold was in abundance, gemstones were not, so they used various techniques to achieve different looks for their jewelry such as the filigree technique, “kalado” or lace-like effect and changing the color of gold. Gemstones were scarce and only the upper class had access to them. Around the mid-eighteenth century, a lot of Filipinos began wearing crucifixes and scapulars along with the tamborin necklace. The “tamborin” or sometimes spelled as “tamburin” is a very traditional Filipino jewelry."ITEM ID4937 Please note there are no returns or exchanges on items.
