Description: The exact age of this fabulous Catherine Parker Melton (1888 - 1959) seascape painting is unknown, but listed artist Catherine Parker Melton was a very prolific painter of landscapes and seascapes, so this piece is at least 65 years old. I would estimate it was painted in the 1950's based on the color palette and frame style. Parker Melton was originally from Nashville, Tennessee and attended Peabody College in Nashville. She is noted for her landscape paintings of the beautiful countryside that surrounded her, and her wonderful renditions of coastal landscapes. Her paintings are highly collectible today.This beautiful oil-on-board painting was rendered in shades of gray and blue and will work with almost any type of decor. It features a distant lighthouse on the edge of a small cliff overlooking the ocean with sea birds swooping and flying overhead. The sweeping sand dunes and sea oats are at the foreground with gray clouds and dimming light in the background - could be an approaching storm or the blue hour after sunset. The painting is mounted in a solid wood frame that has been painted a deep gun metal gray. The frame is about 3.5 inches wide and has an interior linen border. The picture measures about 23 inches in width and is 27 inches tall (framed), portrait configuration - a nice medium-large size that will work in many places. The painting is in good vintage condition. This is an older vintage painting from the 1940s - 1950s, so there will be imperfections related to age. The painting surface is clean with no tears, holes, or stains. The sides of the frame have some dings and light scuffing, consistent with normal wear and age of the piece - no splintering, cracking, or deep gouges in the wood. The linen border on the inside of the frame has some age-related discoloration but no overt stains, holes, tears, or loose thread. The inner rim of linen border also has some dings from normal wear. The hanging bracket on the back of the piece is secure and sturdy. The back of the board has a large scrape upper left and two scrapes in the lower left corner (see photos) - no affect on the appearance of the painting. See photos for additional details.
