Description: MARVEL COMICS Marvel Cinematic Universe MCU CONFIRMED Key:FANTASTIC FOUR (2025) Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four is one of most anticipated films the MCU has ever announced, and details about the film are finally coming to light even as the project prepares to begin filming later this year. The principle cast -- MISTER FANTASTIC, INVISIBLE WOMAN, HUMAN TORCH and THE THING -- is locked in, the actors announced on Valentine's Day 2024. Other characters, such as the film's main antagonists (rumored to be GALACTUS and SILVER SURFER, DOCTOR DOOM and perhaps other related characters) are in the process of casting. And last but not least, the robotic HERBIE will also be featured in the film. The story of Fantastic Four will be, for the most part, a period piece, taking place during the 1960's instead of the present-day MCU. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has also said that the film won't be an Origin story. These two facts alone set the film apart from previous Fox Fantastic Four films, as each of the two FF franchises were Origin stories, with both of them set in the Modern era. Moreover, it's recently been CONFIRMED that this periodic adventure won't be set within the MCU proper, but elsewhere on another Earth in the MCU Multiverse, on an Earth where the 1960's is the current era. It's in that reality that Galactus will threaten all life as we know it, and in that reality that the FF intervene, with Multiversal incursions ultimately causing the team to travel (escape!) from their doomed Universe to that of the main MCU-616. Keeping these facts and other rumors of the Fantastic Four film in mind, one might still wonder why both the comics community -- not to mention Marvel Studios itself, in an official communication -- has identified the 2021 limited series Fantastic Four: Life Story as a an MCU key. After all, the original Fantastic Four comic series began its long publication run in the early 60's, and any issue published within that timeframe should be relevant to the film and its rumored setting, shouldn't it? Where characters are concerned, of course, the answer would be Yes, as comic book keys almost always are identified by specific moments, like the First Appearance of a given hero or villain. Story-arcs can also be keys, as they represent a "longer moment" or a delimited period of time. But concerning an indefinite period of time, such as an entire decade like the 1960's, the answer, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, is No. That fact, along with the other bits of information sources have gleaned about the Marvel Studios movie (such as Galactus involvement, the film taking place in another reality, no Origin story) suggests that the most influential comic book on the film is FF: Life Story. Indeed, FF: Life Story checks all the boxes rumored or known to exist to-date. FF: Life Story isn't a re-telling of the Marvel-616 Fantastic Four. The story, especially that of the First Issue, takes place during the 1960's on Earth-21766, thus placing the events squarely in the Multiversal realm. Moreover, while the FF of the Marvel-616 were at one time a team that originated during the 1960's, in 2024, that fact is no longer true. Superhero story-telling in mainstream superhero comics follows a "sliding time-line" (as opposed to adhering to the "fixed timeline" of our real world) in order to keep characters and events relevant and relative to the modern readership. Thus, the modern day iteration of the FF originated much more recently, perhaps in the 1990's, or at least a time today's readers can better understand and which is relative to the ages of characters that never truly get old and die. The heroic members of Fantastic Four in Life Story aren't subject to a siding time-line; they age along their world in "real-time" and the effect their existence has on their reality is drastic and lasting. The latter point is illustrated through each of the six issues of Life Story, as each issue encapsulates an entire decade of the FF's impact on their world. As Marvel Studios' film will focus squarely on the FF during the 1960's, the first issue of the mini-series is the most relevant key, although additional elements regarding story events may be taken from other issues in the series. Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four won't be an adaptation of FF: Life Story, of course, or any more of an adaptation that Captain America III: Civil War (2016) was an adaptation of Marvel Comics' Civil War (2006-2007). FF: Life Story #1 is, very likely, the closest reflection of the world of the Fantastic Four as any of will have ahead of its scheduled premiere on July 25th, 2025. _______________________ This issue is the first excellent chapter in an incredible and excellent six-part limited series to which we give our highest recommendation.
