Description: This is an incredible and Fine Antique Old Scottish Loch Landscape Oil Painting on canvas, by the talented Victorian English painter, William E. Harris (1856 - 1929.) This artwork depicts a bucolic and finely rendered Scottish landscape scene, on the banks of the famed Loch Leven in the Scottish Highlands. This majestic landscape scene at sunrise depicts multiple trees, azure waters, and a man atop a white Shetland pony, with his English Setter dog nearby. The golden rays of the setting sun cast a gilded hue upon sky and landscape below, creating a bucolic and enchanting scene. Signed and dated in the lower left corner: "William E. Harris 1909" in the lower left corner. There is also a title and artist's name painted on the lower center edge of the frame which reads: "Morning Loch Leven, N.B... W. E. Harris." Additionally, an old, yellowed label on the top stretcher bar of the verso lists a price of "400 Pounds Sterling," an enormous sum of money for the time period. Approximately 30 3/4 x 44 1/2 inches (including frame.) 22 1/8 x 36 inches. Good condition for over a century of age and storage, with moderate craquelure, paint loss, and edge wear to the original period gilded wood frame (please see photos carefully.) Priced to Sell. Harris was a British landscape painter whose work is reminiscent of the earlier artist John Constable. Born in Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1860, Harris spent much of his later life in London, exhibiting at both the Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Academy. Harris’s works often focus on river and maritime subjects like boats on the Thames and rural mills, such as in his realistic depiction of a roaring river in the painting Fishing for trout (1916). Between 1879 and 1900, Harris exhibited 50 paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists. The artist died in 1930 in Worcestershire, United Kingdom. William E. Harris is recorded as a popular landscape painter who lived and worked from a studio in his native Birmingham, later settling in London. Whilst working from his studio in London he exhibited three paintings at the Royal Academy and five at the Institute of Oil Painters.From 1879-1900 he showed an impressive fifty paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists, these subjects comprising landscapes, river and coastal subjects. He appeared in the local directory in Birmingham in 1899.William E. Harris died in 1930. This much sought artist sells for high auction prices (excess of $10,000) worldwide including Christies Auction house. William Elias Harris was born in Birmingham in 1854 to Elias and Jane Harris. His father died when he was young, and his mother later remarried. Like many artists of the time who came from working class families, he initially took a job in the metal industry and also worked as an engraver before becoming a full time artist.Harris married Mary Ann Bayliss at Birmingham in December, 1872 and together they lived at Victoria Road, Aston. His son Edwin Elias Harris also became an artist. He began exhibiting in Birmingham from 1879 at a number of local galleries including the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham. He moved to London around 1885, before settling in Eton Wick, Berkshire at the end of the 1880’s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1889 and at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Glasgow Institute, Royal Hibernian Society and the Walker Art Gallery.Harris spent his time painting the views of Worcestershire, Berkshire, Surrey and Wales and specialised in river landscapes and marine scenes. By 1893, he had moved back to the Worcestershire area living in Broadway for a time before returning to Birmingham to live in Balsall Heath. After the death of his first wife, he married Alice Gertrude Russell in 1927 and they lived at 368 Moseley Road, Birmingham. He died at Birmingham on 1 June, 1934.Examples of his work are held by Chertsey Museum, Henley Town Council, Museum of Farnham and the National Trust.
