Description: This is a large early American portrait, probably painted by an itinerant artist. Excellent condition in a wide gold shallow cove frame. The painting was placed on a fresh linen support some time ago (see last photo). This is a customary conservation treatment for paintings of this age and preserves and stabilizes the work for the future enjoyment of the viewer. I would estimate this was done fifty to seventy years ago. That's why the back appears newer than the painting. The stretchers are old, possibly original.
