About the Artist: Yuri Gevorgian Yuroz Born: 1956 - Soviet ArmeniaKnown for: Sculpture-sensual figure, drawingName variants: Yuri Yuroz Yuri Gevorgian Yuroz (Born 1956) is active/lives in California / Armenia. Yuri Yuroz is known for Sculpture-sensual figure, drawing. Biography from the Archives of askART By Matthew LuttClose your eyes.Yuroz is the artist of the people. Lovers, musicians, poets, athletes, the homeless, and even refugees fill his canvases, drawing forth the spectrum of emotions and moods that reside deep in the human soul. Yuroz amazing ability to bring this soulful human quality to fruition through his art stems from his own life experiences.Born in Soviet Armenia in 1956, Yuroz was only ten years old when he entered the renowned Akop Kodjoyan School of Art in the Armenian capital of Yerevan. After graduating with honors, Yuroz gathered up his incredible talents and entered the Yerevan University of Art and Architecture. His natural aptitude for architecture can be seen to this day in every aspect of his art. Yuroz most recent sculpture, the life-sized "A Delicate Balance," displays an artist with an implicit knowledge and understanding of how angles and lines must converge to create the lovely curves of the human form.Even though he was a master architect and a blooming artist, Yuroz political views clashed with the Soviet regime in Armenia, and he realized that freedom was the only path to his true artistic potential. In order to find this path, Yuroz became a refugee. He married a woman who gained entrance into the United States, but Yuroz himself was not allowed to emigrate for seven years. Those seven years imbued him with a compassion and understanding for all refugees seeking new homes and fresh beginnings. Fittingly, in January 2000 Yuroz was chosen by the United Nations to be the official artist for their 50th anniversary stamp honoring refugees worldwide, and in November his mural was unveiled at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Through this mural we can see the grand panorama of Yuroz vision, where individual and racial differences slide away, and the courage of refugees and humanity as a whole is brought to the surface. Later this year his magnificent testament to human courage will be sent to the General Assembly Building in Geneva, Switzerland, to be installed permanently as a part of their collection. When the years of waiting finally came to an end, Yuroz was reunited with his wife in the United States. But the long period of separation combined with his tireless dedication to art led to conflicts at home, and eventually Yuroz set out on his own. After struggling for years to achieve and enjoy the freedom America offered he found himself homeless in the land of opportunity. Even though he had no home, hope was his constant companion, and Yuroz continued to create art with the supplies of the streets. Napkins and cardboard were conjured into canvas, and discarded pens were transformed into paintbrushes.Yuroz Los Angeles street friends were portraits filling the gallery of his mind with the beauty and simplicity of life. Like the refugees who would later populate his United Nations mural, Yuroz was able to capture the survivor mentality of his homeless brethren when they made their way onto canvas, a reflection of his own burning desire to create art in his new home. With the success of this early "Hollywood Boulevard" series, Yuroz was walking his dream path.Since that time, Yuroz art has reached new heights and continues to climb. But even with all of his growth and success as an artist, Yuroz has never lost sight of his own humble beginnings, and he has donated the proceeds from a variety of originals and limited editions to numerous causes and foundations. In 1995 he created "The Harlequins Gift" for Comic Relief, an organization that alerts audiences to the growing American homeless population. Also, 2001 will mark the fourth consecutive year that Yuroz will be the official artist for the Suzuki Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego, and he has once again created an original oil for sale at silent auction to benefit the Leukemia Society of America."Taste My Wine" is Yuroz first serigraph of the new century, a painting he created in conjunction with the launch of his own line of wine, which will feature his artwork on the label of Benevolence, a "cabernet" blend from a 1999 California vintage. Benevolence will make its debut this November during the Las Vegas Odyssey 2001: A Celebration of Wine, Food, and Art, and Yuroz will be the official artist for the event. Also, later this year Yuroz will be meeting with the Pope about a ceiling painting project for an Armenian Church in Glendale, California, which was blessed by the Pope.Even with such momentous events upcoming, Yuroz never forgets the small joys of sounding our feelings and moods through his art. A producer who was in the studio recently to interview Yuroz for a national commercial experienced his signature "art massage," which involves drawing on the clothing people are wearing. When Yuroz finished his "massage," the producer was left speechless by the finished product on the back of her T-shirt. Loss of speech is a common reaction to Yuroz art. We are stunned by the human quality captured in such a simple way, and words cannot express the emotions Yuroz stirs in our souls. Yuroz emerged on the art scene in the United States in 1987 with paintings and drawings that felt as though you could take them off the canvas and put them on a pedestal. He would tell us that each painting was alive for him and had a human dimension.Eventually he would bring these large sculptural bodies to life with the release of his first sculptures in 1990’s. He, like other artists at the time, was offered the opportunity to have his paintings transformed into sculpture by a foundry artisan, but being Yuroz, with his demand for quality, he chose to instead wait until he was ready.Collectors love Yuroz’s cubist style – so reminiscent of Picasso – as well as his recurrent themes of love and companionship. The artist’s own hardships only serve to make him more appreciative of the tender moments shared between friends and lovers. Drawing on his Armenian heritage, Yuroz incorporates the imagery of the pomegranate into his art, as well as other symbols, such as the blue rose, the book of poetry and the guitar without strings. Each element tells a part of the story, illuminating the nature of the relationship between the characters and what the future holds for them. YurozArmenian-American / B.1956 Yuroz, an Armenian-born neo-cubist, is the painter of the people for the people. The voice he represents in his work expresses the innermost reflections of the human condition: pain and suffering, joy and love, beauty and natural grace. Lovers, musicians, poets, athletes, the homeless, and refugees fill his canvas, drawing forth the spectrum of emotions that reside deep in the human soul. Fittingly, he was chosen by the United Nations to be the official artist for the 50th-anniversary stamp honoring refugees worldwide, and he is the only living American artist who has his work hung in the Vatican’s permanent collection. Yuroz’s impressive ability to bring a soulful human quality to fruition through his art stems from his own life experiences. Symbolism forms the backbone of Yuroz’s classical romantic paintings and the themes of the stories he tells through his paintbrushes. Blue is the color of healing, and the rose is the symbol of love. A blue rose symbolizes healing through love. The pomegranate symbolizes fertility, creativity, prosperity, and power. For Yuroz, the pomegranate is a symbol of survival as it manages to grow in the most arid landscapes. Right there, the moment is suspended in time, and the energy is as great as your soul will allow. The Transformative Power of Yuroz’s ArtA celebrated Los Angeles based artist, Yuroz believes that art is the most disarming, ice-breaking and rapport building communication tool to support progress of people, organizations, societies and even countries. In Yuroz’s mind, the essence of art is the energy, which is more powerful than we are. It originates from a higher plane than that in which we live our daily lives. Through the art, we are able to access more potent sources of consciousness and emotion and we become more than we are.Spanning across mediums and genres, Yuroz’s work celebrates romance, edifies human emotions, promotes peace, and advocates tolerance, encouraging healing and growth while liberating love and compassion. Blue is the color of healing and rose is the symbol of love. The blue rose symbolizes healing through love. Pomegranate symbolizes fertility, creativity, prosperity and power. To the artist, this fruit that bore through the rockiest and the most arid landscapes is a symbol of survival.Yuroz loves working with children through art, as possibly he is a child at heart, always keeping his senses sharp and spirit fresh. Yuroz’s art cuts through race, politics and religion as he employs universal symbols to express his timeless messages and evergreen themes, with touching stories that inspire and shape new generations of communicators to come. The Artist’s Journey: From Armenia to Global RenownAt the age of ten, Yuroz was accepted to attend the prestigious Akop Kodjoyan School of Art in Soviet Armenia. His classical training, combined with skills earned while attaining his Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Yerevan University of Art and Architecture has given him an edge to be able to mesh the attributes of the Renaissance masters with innovations of contemporary art while blending a unique sense of balance, color and space with modern day technology when creating his masterpieces. Yuroz has always been an architect and an explorer all his life. It manifested in many ways over last 30 years in his career being an artist. Yuroz, an Armenian born neo-cubist, is the painter of the people for the people. The voice he represents in his work expresses the innermost reflections of the human condition: pain and suffering, joy and love, beauty, and natural grace. Lovers, musicians, poets, athletes, homeless, and refugees fill his canvas, drawing forth the spectrum of emotions that reside deep in the human soul. Fittingly, he was chosen by the United Nations to be the official artist for the 50th-anniversary stamp honoring refugees worldwide and he is the only living American artist who has his work hung in the Vatican’s permanent collection. Yuroz’s impressive ability to bring a soulful human quality to fruition through his art stems from his own life experiences. Symbolism forms the backbone of Yuroz’s classical romantic paintings and the themes of the stories he tells through his paintbrushes. Blue is the color of healing and rose is the symbol of love. A blue rose symbolizes healing through love. Pomegranate symbolizes fertility, creativity, prosperity and power. For Yuroz, the pomegranate is a symbol of survival as it manages to grow in the most arid landscapes. As a young man in Soviet Armenia, he was steadfast in creating innovative and impressive art. He was admitted into the esteemed Akop Kodjoyan School of Art in Armenia at the age of ten, making him the youngest student ever to be accepted. Later on, he attended the Yerevan University of Art and Architecture. Due to self-expression not being a popular subject for the Soviets, his artistic creativity, originality, and individuality began to suffer, leading him to immigrate to the United States of America. Now in America, Yuroz encountered a journey of poverty and loneliness. As a homeless man in America, hope was his only companion, and he continued to create art with the supplies of the streets. Napkins and cardboard were combined to create a sort of canvas, and discarded pens were transformed into paintbrushes. For Yuroz, “Art is not a luxury; it is a necessity.” This basic survival instinct that implanted itself into the artist’s mind would provoke the touching experiences and zeal for life to be turned into expressive portraits filled with color. Over the years, he has been able to create studies of different mythologies and cultures with an open-minded attitude towards what is new and different. Yuroz created a unique stylistic dimension that would strengthen his creativity and in turn, would ignite the interest of his legion of collectors. His neo-cubist style of painting sets off from the greats, Picasso and Braque, a unique style that vibrates with the spirit of movement, grace, and story in his compositions. It is the combination of his personal experiences, the human subconscious, and his academic training that shine a light on his passion: presenting a narrative through an image that is compelling, beautiful, and inspiring. A Painter, Architect and a devoted Philanthropist, through his art and the Yuroz Foundation, Yuroz has raised millions for many more international and national charity events and foundations, donating to causes he embraces.
