Excerpt from Book First into Sangin is about a selection of men that were hand- picked by the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment, the soldiers involved were at the top of their game & the fittest within the unit, one soldier in particular had been awarded the Military Cross for a complex ambush in Baghdad on the previous tour, but due to combat & casualties he kept it hidden from the rest of his platoon. The aim of this book is to put the reader in the shoes of a forgotten platoon, due to the platoon being integrated with paratroopers & working as a fighting platoon within 3 Para Battle group, most of the work they carried out was seen by the media as paratroopers, the bond these men grew to share alongside the elite paratroopers to this day is still not challenged by other units within the British army these soldiers being the first soldiers into the infamous Sangin town, they were in fact Irish Rangers. Having commanded a section of 8 men on the infamous HERRICK 4 tour in Sangin, he had a reputation of loyalty to his men & peers, this was not seen by some who went out of their way to try and tarnish his name, he also had a lot of unfinished business within Helmand, and needed to prove to himself that he was up to the job, he went back out on HERRICK 8 as a platoon sergeant & used his experience this time to ensure his men would have the best advice & knowledge of the ground, his casualty evacuation plans were faultless, however with the death of his radio operator and numerous casualties within his platoon & Company, what happens on the battlefield should stay there!! he has now decided to call it a day on his career on the frontline & shortly after HERRICK 8 he left the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, today he looks back at his time with a world famous Regiment with pride & satisfaction. The Prologue opens with me working in Iraq during OP TELIC 7 as a team commander, the scene is me learning how to get the best from my men, picking up helpful hints from 2 other platoon sergeants, that had commanded me, getting to know what the feeling of exchanging bullets with the enemy & taking this experience & building from it, it helped me to turn my section into a fighting unit that nothing could break, even the Taliban. Part one starts with me working as a team Commander in C-Company while in Iraq on Telic 7, it shows what life was like in a camp, that was never far from the media attention, due to the amount of corruption within the Iraqi police force, they found it hard to interact with the local authorities, with the soldiers trying to find a way to pass the time, it shows what life is like for front line soldiers, having conducted a recce of the Baghdad camp, & being involved in a complex ambush, it explains what it is like to work in such a volatile place like Baghdad, every single day could very well be your last. With the added pressure of keeping at a safe distance from the American forces who would openly fire bullets into your windscreen just for getting too close to their vehicles. Part two Is about settling into a routine in Baghdad, having found out that the Commanding Officer has hand-picked a platoon from the whole Battalion, this platoon would be the first platoon in the Royal Irish Regiments history to be sent to battle with an elite parachute battalion, it shows what this platoon had to endure in order to fit in with the paratroopers and earn the respect from the soldiers they stood beside & fought the Taliban with, having completed an arduous exercise in the Oman, where the first ever use of Apache gunships were called upon by the ground forces to engage targets on the ground, this was followed up by using the forward air controllers (FAC), this was overseen by members of parliament, it turned out to be successful & the decision was made to use these assets during Herrick 4 Part three Explains how after landing in a desert that was to be known as Bastion camp, how the platoon found it hard to train due to the sand being like dust, how they quickly got their orders & began to move around the battle space, having been the first ever platoon to go into Sangin Valley, they actually arrived there in snatch vehicle, and making it there in one piece was a challenge itself, they quickly became nervous of the militia, due to the smoking of drugs around the soldiers & the fact they carried an array of weapon systems it was just a matter of time when they would turn on the soldiers, it explains how senior ranking officers had arguments on the radio in order to get the praise of who called in the first fire mission into enemy territory. Part four goes on to mention how this platoon were the first soldiers outside of Special Forces to conduct a close target recce (CTR) since the Korean war, having made it into the heart of enemy territory & got close & personal with enemy forces, it just shows how these soldiers had mentally prepared themselves for such a tour, these soldiers had just carried out 2 operational tours with only 4 weeks off, they we hungry for battle & at the top of their game, they knew that members of the platoon may not return, but this only made the bond stronger. Part five explains how the platoon got moved around the battlefield in order to re-enforce other units & the Afghan national army, how they would spend every spare minute training for combat, learning the Pastuni language along with training in the killing house to hone room to room clearing, this was invaluable when thrown into the heart of Sangin & conducting urban warfare, the platoon got to conduct every single aspect of infantry handbook, with in 1 tour, it shows how one man conducted himself in battle, having been called forward by his Officer Commanding to be told that he had been awarded the Military Cross(MC) he had to keep the news to himself, as his platoon had just lost a man, who happened to be his section second in command & were in fact grieving, this news was only passed to his fellow soldiers when morale was on the rise, it shows the true strength & courage of the men from Ranger platoon. The Epilogue takes place in a one man bunk, where upon return from nearly a year of Operational deployment & numerous casualties, one soldier having been awarded the Military Cross finds it hard to grasp that he is now faced with allegations of looting from the dead having sanitised his second in commands belongings along with another soldier he is not faced by the dead soldiers mother the allegation of theft from his kit, this plays such a stress on the soldier that the Commanding Officer decides to give him a career break until the court case, having been warned to avoid the media & reading of papers, he goes abroad to hide from the press, with the help from his family & girlfriend he fights his way back to the top.
