Description: This auction is for a Scarce FIRST MODEL J. W. Young & Sons "AMBIDEX CASTING REEL" Fixed-spool reel, dating from circa 1945. Hand engraved inside No. 93 The Ambidex was introduced in 1946 in one size. The earliest reels were hand assembled at the Mayfield Works circa 1944-45 and given matching hand-engraved part numbers. This is one such reel, and I have removed the side plate to reveal the numbers "93" on the inside (see photo). All the other required elements of the first model are there, i.e. chromed nuts securing the handle shaft (2nd model had bolts); body casting without locating lugs; early simple tension adjuster; spool bears Allcocks part # SA 24. The paintwork on these early reels was very fragile but this reel retains a lot of its original finish and works well. Please study the photos carefully as they form a major part of the description.
