Description: First Period Minton-Poulson bone china c. 1808 (George lll) Coffee Can in Minton Pattern #619: Shells and Seaweed - in Bat Printed Bone China with Sevres-style 'crossed Ls' mark with M above 619. A finely detailed study of shells in rare overglaze bat print with gilt sprigs and gilt edge detail. Height 5.9cm, diameter 6.7cm. Dated Circa 1808 by mark and pattern. By mark: after 1805 Minton removed the abbreviated 'No.' before the pattern mark, through to 1816. By pattern: Minton Pattern Book No.2 c.1810 comprised patterns 147 - 948, i.e. pattern numbers lower than 948 existed by 1810. This finely detailed pattern is the only known surviving bat printed pattern by Minton. Copper plates were stippled (made up of tiny dots) rather than line-engraved. Pads, or bats of pliable glue were applied to the copper plate and powdered pigment was dusted on to create the desired image. The result, after firing, was a very delicate, soft image that emulated stippled engravings. The hand craftsmanship required in the bat printing process quickly proved uneconomical as the 19th century potteries sought techniques for volume production and it was largely abandoned by 1820. The first Minton bone china was made in the china pottery of Joseph Poulson with whom Thomas Minton had formed a partnership in c.1796. When Poulson died in 1808, Minton carried on using Poulson's pottery for china until 1816, with John Turner Junior as managing potter. Minton built a new china pottery in 1824. CONDITION Bright and clean, light signs of wear or use, gilding has slight edge wear, no chips or cracks but a couple of tiny nibbles to edge. Tiny lumps, indentations and inclusions as made, a spray of gilt or pigment below one of the shells as pictured - overall a very good example.
