"West from the Columbia" is an essay in photographs about the meeting of a great river with the sea. This book is at once a celebration of beauty at the ocean's edge and a meditation on our relationship with it. Book Condition: Fine in Fine unclipped Dust Jacket. Book Dimensions Height:13 inchesWidth:12.4 inchesDepth:1 inch Reference: Russell T. Clement, Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville: "West from the Columbia is Adams's tenth Aperture book of photographic essays, following Listening to the River and Why People Photograph, both published in 1994. Sixty stunningly lyrical black-and-white tritone photographs of the Columbia River emptying into the Pacific are followed by brief captions and location notes. Adams's trademark high-contrast, harsh-light works are tempered here by incredible nuances of water, sand, light, and sky. In contrast to Adams's earlier works, human presence is scarcely acknowledged in this latest quest for and celebration of the area's natural forms, rhythms, and beauty." Additional Information: Robert Adams (born Orange, New Jersey, 1937) is a major figure in New Topographics movement known for his photographs of the modern American West. Robert Adams is widely regarded as one of the most significant and influential chroniclers of the American West, renowned for his austere views of a landscape profoundly changed by human development. Adams's major projects include his seminal work in the suburbs of Colorado Springs and Denver and his more recent, elegiac portrayals of trees and the coast in the Pacific Northwest. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, two Guggenheim Fellowships, the Spectrum International Prize for Photography, and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, his many books include: From the Missouri West (1980), Beauty in Photography: Essays in Defense of Traditional Values (1981), Our Lives and Our Children (1983), Summer Nights (1985), Los Angeles Spring (1986), and Perfect Times, Perfect Places (1988). Adams's work has been widely exhibited, including in a major retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
