This original work was drawn on superior chain linked "laid" paper. Description We are delighted to be able to offer a fantastic collection of original hand drawn botanical studies drawn by a pre-eminent Austrian botanist of the day. The drawings are of a high quality and Weiss was know to be a very accomplished artist. These drawings represented flowers from the botanical garden at Lemberg, now Ukraine. "Weiss' mastery and use of the brush and ink make his illustrations the most artistically accomplished we have (ever) seen" (Oesterr Bot. Zeitschrift, 1884). Each drawing shows the plant in bloom, with anatomical details shown at the foot of the drawing. The drawings are surrounded by a border either scored or in pencil which presumably intended to indicate the size of an engraved plate. Adolf Weiss (1837-94) was born in Freiwaldau, Silesia (Austria). Between 1855-58 he attended the University Of Vienna where he studied botany. In 1862 he was appointed professor of the botany and director of the Botanic Garden at Lemberg, but before he took up the post he undertook a tour of Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany to study botanical gardens in those countries and and to forge links between them and Lemberg. Under Weiss' direction the Lemberg Gardens became the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These rare one of a kind botanical renderings are exquisite in their details and stylistically are very advanced. They most likely were intended to be published but never reached that state.
