Folly Cove Designer Aino Clarke's "My Friday" on Paper Signed/Notarized 1956

Description: From the book, "Trailblazing Women Printmakers" by Elena M. Sarni regarding Clarke's "My Friday;""Aino later said in an interview that her mother had wondered who would be interested in her Fridays, but it proved to be one of her most fascinating designs." Selling a truly one-of-a-kind signed and notarized print made by Aino Clarke of her design, "My Friday." Although not legally binding, several of the FCD had their prints notarized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in an effort to claim ownership of their art and deter their designs from being copied. After the print was signed and stamped by the notary (and artist) it was carefully folded and placed in a safe deposit box (see folds on reverse). It could be said that Aino Yrjola Clarke inadvertently started the Folly Cove Designers with neighbor Virginia Demetrios when she asked for design lessons in exchange for violin instruction. A lifelong friend of Mrs. Demetrios and member of the FCD until it disbanded, Clarke created numerous designs, several of which are extremely detailed such as "Jazz," and "Musicale." In the top left vignette Mrs. Clarke features herself stretching in bed with her print "Schooners" hanging on the wall behind her bed! Also illustrated is Aino taking a sauna which was a celebrated aspect of life for Folly Cove residents of Finnish descent. Date recorded by the notary is April 5, 1956. In her own hand, Clarke wrote; "My Friday" - "I hereby certify that this design was created by ne and is my property. Aino Yrjola Clarke"Condition: Blue ink on parchment-colored thin paper. There are five total tears of various sizes in the border around the blue ink - some more detectable than others. The most significant is in the top left corner. None of the tears enter the design. There are also two slightly rolled features in the paper along the top border and again on the right - likely created prior to the print being inked. Clarke also failed to transfer the ink consistently throughout the center of the linoleum block so the ink is visibly less sharp in the middle of the print than the edges. Shading on the back is shadowing from the camera. Again, the paper is thin and likely not meant to last as long as it has! Should you purchase I highly advise handling with care until you can have it framed properly. It will be mailed in a frame with an acrylic window.
