Description: Four Daughters: Movie Series Collection on four DVDs, from the Warner Brothers Archive Collection. I do not see on the case that this set is Manufactured on Demand, but I believe it is. Four Daughters (1938) - This story of music professor Adam Lemp, his four daughters and the men who love them aims straight at the heart - and scores an unerring hit. Poignant, laced with laughter and flawlessly acted, it catches viewers up in the quiet but powerful lives of ordinary people. Michael Curtiz's direction is assured and the casting is ideal: Claude Rains as Lemp, the three Lane sisters (plus Gale Page) as the daughters, and newcomer John Garfield, making a stunning impression as the troubled pianist who remains an outsider despite the family's open arms Daughters Courageous (1939) - The stars and director of Four Daughters reunite for another tender Golden Era classic about love, loyalty and the sustaining strength of family. This time, the story revolves around a father who returns 20 years after abandoning his wife and daughters, just in time to warn his youngest against throwing her happiness away on a footloose charmer just like Dad. Daughters Courageous and Four Daughters "have much in common: warmth, humor, poignancy and the less-readily definable quality which we can describe only vaguely as an interest in people," the New York Times's Frank S. Nugent wrote in his admiring review, in which he judged it "a thoroughly pleasant entertainment with a thoroughly pleasant cast to grace it." Four Wives (1939) - In 1938, Four Daughters packed movie palaces, making a star out of John Garfield and winning hearts with it's appealing depiction of the Lemps, a family that shares an unshakeable bond between parent and child, sister and sister. In 1939 the Lemps were back (Garfield's character, who died in the earlier film, makes a ghostly appearance) for another tender drama of everyday life. This time, all the sisters wed - even widowed Ann finds marital happiness - and joyfully prepare for the tears and laughter of motherhood. Returning Four Daughters talent includes the original cast, director Michael Curtiz, scripter Julius J. Epstein (this time working with his brother Philip G.) and Max Steiner, who provides another splendid score Four Mothers (1941) - Four Daughters. Four Wives. Four Mothers. The popular film series comes to an end with this laughter-touched melodrama that welcomes fans to one last visit with the Lemp family. The four Lemp sisters, played by the Lane sisters (Priscilla, Rosemary and Lola) plus Gale Page, have faced triumph and tragedy together. Now the years of struggle seem to be over - until a real estate investment brings financial disaster to them and their town. The townsfolk blame the girls' father (Claude Rains), the family home may have to be sold... and the Lemps prove once again that the greatest strength comes from family. A life-and-death medical mystery (one of the girls married a crusading doctor) adds suspense to the sentiment. This disc is expected to play back in DVD video "play only" devices (DVD and blu-ray players). Although I can play it on my Mac, please be aware that it may not play back in other devices.
