Description: Framed TEXAS as INDEPENDENT NATION 1845 Original Handcolored W Hemi Map-Mitchell The beautiful, historical item is framed and ready to display on a table top, desk, or can be hung on a wall. This is an uncommon, increasingly hard to find, 1849 copyrighted engraved handcolored print showing The Western Hemisphere. The map was printed for the 1850 edition of the Augustus Mitchell's book "An Easy Introduction To The Study Of Geography: Designed For The Instruction Of Children In Schools and Families. Even though Texas joined the United States in 1845, the Company had not yet updated the maps in their geography books. The map more accurately displays the Western Hemisphere as it was around 1840. It is worth mentioning that this map clearly shows Alaska as being owned by Russia. There are many other interesting details that differ from what we have come to recognize today. This fine hand colored engraving is already matted and framed just waiting to be put on display. The frame measures 12 3/4 by 14 3/4 inches. The map measures about 4 1/4 by 5 inches. The opening in the frame measures 7 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. It is worth noting that this map is one that reflects the state of Texas having recently been added to the Union, otherwise the area marked for Mexico would have been larger and/or Texas would have been shown as a separate country, which it was until 1845. This engraving was taken from a geography book by S. Augustus Mitchell and published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.: Philadelphia (PA). A copy of the title page, showing the 1850 date, comes with the original print. Note, the title page is a copy of the original title page. The map is the original, hand colored 1850 map.
