SIR FRANCIS BULLER - FRAGMENT SIGNED 01/23/1793 - HFSID 23123 FRANCIS BULLER His signature on a the fragment of a sworn statement (1793), affixed to the 6x10 mount of a 4x6 engraving of Buller. Document Fragment signed: "F. Buller", 4¼x1¼ paper affixed to 6½x10¼ mount below 4x6 engraving - 3 surfaces. Signature follows the following fragment of a document written in an unknown hand: "Sworn at Seaports Inn Hall/the 23rd day of Jany 1793 Before" [Buller's signature]. Sir Francis Buller (1746-1800) was made a King's Counsel in 1777 and elevated to the King's Bench one year later. Prime Minister Pitt passed over him in naming a new Lord Chief Justice, but did make him a Baronet (1790). He presided at important cases, including the patent trial of cotton mill magnate Richard Arkwright. Buller's judicial temperment was questioned by some, and he earned the nickname "Judge Thumb" after declaring that a husband could legally thrash his wife so long as the stick were no longer than his thumb.
