Smith" just weeks before his election as Governor of New York, writing "For my old friend, Catherine Sandy, with hope of ultimate reform, from / Franklin D. Roosevelt / Warm Springs / Oct 5 1928". Named after a line from a William Wordsworth poem which describes the ideal qualities of a virtuous and honorable person, the book was based on a moving speech FDR delivered at the Democratic National Convention of 1928, nominating Alfred E. Smith for the Presidency. Smith's devout Catholicism was an issue at the time and due to that many Democrats had serious reservations about voting for him; Ultimately, Smith would lose the 1928 election in a landslide.
