William Shakespeare, who lived from 1546-1616, was born in STRATFORD UPON AVON. Henry VI, who lived from 1421 – 1471, was KING of ENGLAND from 1422 to 1461 and again from 1470 to 1471, and disputed KING OF FRANCE from 1422 to 1453. The only child of HENRY V, he succeeded to the English throne at the age of nine months upon his father's death, and succeeded to the French throne on the death of his grandfather CHARLES VI shortly afterwards. Henry inherited a long-running conflict in France, known as the Hundred Years' War. By 1453, Calais was Henry's only remaining territory on the continent. Henry experienced a mental breakdown after the failure of the war, with Richard of York taking control of the government as regent until his recovery the following year. Civil war broke out in 1460, leading to a long period of dynastic conflict known as the War of the Roses. Henry was taken prisoner and imprisoned in the Tower of London where died on 21 May 1471. Shakespeare's three Henry plays tell this story in greater detail. Richard III, who lived from 1452 – 1485, was King of England from 1483 until his death in 1485, at the age of 32, in the BATTLE OF BOSWORTH FIELD. He was the last king of the HOUSE OF YORK and the last of the PLANTAGENET dynasty. His defeat at Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the subject of Shakespeare's historical play Richard III. Richard was struck down in the conflict, making him the last English king to die in battle on home soil and the first since Harold II was killed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. After the battle Richard's corpse was taken to Leicester and buried without pomp. His original tomb monument is believed to have been removed during the Reformation, and his remains were lost for more than five centuries, believed to have been thrown into the River Soar. In 2012, an archaeological excavation by the University of Leicester identified the skeleton found in the excavation as that of Richard III as a result of radiocarbon dating. Richard's remains were reburied in Leicester Cathedral Cathedral on 26 March 2015. Combined shipping is available.
