[Photos from an earlier listing.] John Winslow Irving, who was born in 1942 as John Wallace Blunt, is an American novelist and screenwriter. He grew up in Exeter, New Hampshire, where his stepfather was a Philip Exeter Academy faculty member. Irving was a student athlete in the wrestling program. Irving's father, whom he never met, was shot down in Burma in July 1943 but somehow survived. "A Son of the Circus" is the story of Dr. Farrokh Karuwalla, an Indian born, Viennese-trained Toronto orthopedic surgeon. However, it is Daruwalla's two hobbies that are the impetus of this book's action, taking us through a whirlwind of mistaken identity, criminology, movie-idolism and dark secrets. Daruwalla is an amateur geneticist attempting to find the case of the most common form of dwarfism. He is also the secret screenwriter of the immensely popular Inspector Dhar movies---an Indian phenomenon that the Indian people either love or hate but never ignore. These two avocations merge and involve an unknown twin brother, a gruesome series of murders, a septuagenarian flasher, a transsexual villain, a bizarre post-Raj country club, international durg dealing, and the enigma that is Inspector Dhar himself. The cast of characters range from the tattered refinements of the Duckworth country club to the abject poverty of the Indian streets. 633 pages---OUT OF PRINT and RARE. I offer combined shipping.
