Description: Fraureuth Saxony Plate HandPainted Poppies w/Gold 1898-1928 Artist Jean Saunders Exquisite Decorative SAXONY Hand Painted 12 1/2" PLATE by ARTIST Jean Saunders, Orange POPPY FLOWERS w/Green LEAVES & BUDS, circa 1898-1928 from Fraureuth, Saxony, Germany DESCRIPTION: This 12 1/2" smooth rimmed plate features a large spray of striking orange poppy blooms nestled in their green leaves. There are 3 buds, one of which shows the orange color. There are even lighter green and browner-green ghost leaves to give depth to the painting. The green background wash shows hints of blue & yellow. The large orange blooms have yellow centers with black stamens. The stalks are true to the poppy plant as they have the slight, short hairs. This is very artistically decorated by the talented painter, Jean Saunders, who signed the plate below the lower right green leaf. See photo #8. CONDITION: The condition of this decorative plate is superb. We can find no defects and only very minor damage. See photo #12 to see the chip on the bottom foot next to the 2 factory drilled holes for hanging. This chip is not visible from the front and does not affect how the plate sits on a table or hangs on a wall. There is only very minor age appropriate rubbing to the gold. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is. DIMENSIONS: The elegant plate has a diameter of 12 1/2" and a height of 1 3/8". HISTORY/MARKS: In 1865, Arwed Gustav von Römer and Georg Bruno Foedisch established the porcelain factory of Römer and Foedisch in an old factory for cotton wool in Fraureuth. They produced quality porcelain winning national and international awards while growing in 1885 to 600 employees shortly after the death of Foedisch. In 1891, this became the Fraureuth AG porcelain factory and by 1896 this was one of the largest porcelain factories in Germany with over 200 porcelain painters alone. In the 1898-1899 time period, the trademark changed from the old Latin F in a circle to the mirror monogram of PF in a circle under the crown and then in 1918 the word Saxony is included in the trademark. Expansion continues to include at least 1500 employees in 1920 until continuing financial losses cause bankruptcy in 1926 and production ceases after 61 years. This plate has the black mark #2 cited by website marks4ceramics as used in the 1898-1928 time period. This was probably painted immediately after WWI as the Poppies were commonly painted in that time period to commemorate the fallen soldiers. . .
