Description: The item for sale is an oil on canvas landscape painting of a pair of women washing laundry by a canal in front of a town that was created around the middle of the twentieth century by the American artist Frederick Robbins Childs. The artist studied art in France at the studio of Andre Lhote, a cubist painter. It is not hard to see the influence of Lhote in the landscape offered for sale with the bold colors, dark outlines and spacial layout which is stacked rather than perspective lines. The subject is depicted with most of the bottom third of the painting being a reflection is water of the top two thirds. The water filled canal is angled toward hills in the distance rather than horizontal. A band of sky is above this. Childs' work also bears some resemblance to the mid career work of Conrad Buff with features being represented with rigid shapes rather than fluid detail. The painting is signed in the lower left and titled en verso on the top stretcher bar. The full title is "The laundresses' Provence". The painting was never framed. It has probably been in storage since its creation. There are one or two very minor scratches. Aside from that the painting is clean. The paint is stable with no losses. The painting was not varnished at any time. The canvas size is 24" x 20".
