An absolutely magnificent volume on French Battleships from the ever-reliable Seaforth Publishing. By far the best, and most authoritative, English language hardback on French Battleships. Well worth the price. Well-written and comprehensively illustrated. The authors have also done a first class job in describing all the different classes of Battleships that served in France's navy. This book is a must-have! Here's the official item description: The French produced some of the most striking and innovatory interwar cruiser designs. A large amount of new information about these ships has become available over the past twenty years in France, but this book is the first to make this accessible to an English-speaking readership. Part I explains the design philosophy behind each of the classes built after 1922, and outlines the characteristics of each type, accompanied by detailed data tables and a comprehensive set of specially-drawn plans based on official documents, as well as carefully-selected photographs. Coverage includes the De Grasse, laid down in August 1939 and completed postwar as an AA cruiser, and also the heavy cruisers of the Saint Louis class intended to follow her, about which little has been published. Part II deals with the historical side, covering not only the eventful careers of these ships, but also explaining the peacetime organisation of the Marine Nationale, the complex politics of this turbulent period and their impact on the navy. Like its highly successful predecessor, French Battleships, this beautifully presented book subtly blends technical and historical analysis to produce what must become the standard reference work. Here's an Amazon customer review (2013) which gives the book 5/5: The words are NOT my own and are for descriptive purposes only. Halfway through studying this work, I paused to see how many other books about French Cruisers were also available for sale and found only one. I did this because, although I am constantly researching ships, ships and even more ships, I had just realised French warships were, hitherto, almost completely unknown to me. For me, therefore, this book became a complete education into the subject. Having now compared some of the technical specifications against those included in books detailing a wider range of warships from the same period such as Conway’s and Jane’s, I reached the conclusion this excellent work covers what might easily be described as the golden age of French warship design because of the outstanding features and innovations which were included during the years between WW1 and WW2. The first element of the book which pleased me was the layout. A first-rate preface, which explains much of what you will need to know, is immediately followed by a page of ‘Acronyms and Abbreviations’ which just about covers the rest. As a single example of the detail contained here, the abbreviation ‘EOR’ is explained in both French and English as follows; ‘Ecole des officiers de reserve (School of Officers of the Reserve).’ The remainder of the book is then divided into; Part One Technical and Part Two Historical. Under the former, following an equally useful Introduction, we find chapters as follows; 1. Duguay-Trouin class, 2. Duquesne & Tourville, 3. Suffren class, 4. Pluton, Jeanne d’Arc & Emile Bertin, 5. Algérie, 6. La Galissonniére class, 7. De Grasse class and 8. C5 & Saint Louis designs. Part II includes a further four chapters divided into the following time periods; 9. 1926-1939, 10. 1939-1943, 11. 1943-1945 and finally 12. 1945-1956. The book then concludes with a list of Sources and Index. Apart from the clarity with which all the information is produced, every item is fully supported by an excellent collection of images, maps, paintings, line drawings, cutaway sections and so forth - with something found on almost every page. These include over 180 B&W photographs of the highest calibre and a further 16 images under the heading ‘The artwork of Jean Bladé. Altogether, I consider this to be a first-rate work produced by two very knowledgeable co-authors which contains just about all the information anyone with an interest in the subject might need to know. On top of all that, I thoroughly enjoyed the read. 232 page hardcover published 2009 -------------------------------------------------- SHIPPING:UK Details are provided in the drop down menu below.
