Description: Only the last three letters of the stamp are legible. I can read "ris" for Paris. Obviously, it's a French cello bow from the the early 20th century. You'll be very surprised as to how well this beautiful cello bow plays! Professional caliber. Selling way below cost! This is a special cello bow. It does everything very well. It's nimble when it needs to be and because of the tight lignin fibers in the wood, it is a strong stick. Here is what my professional cellist friend told me after playing the bow: "It has maybe a more aggressive feel than your typical French cello bow, but at the same time, the balance is unusually good compared to anything else he's played on (especially up at the frog). Also in the middle of the bow, the stick does not collapse like so many other bows do - it has a very even feel for the entire length of the stick and the bow changes up at the frog are a joy rather than a nightmare which is very nice. It also is very good for off the string strokes, although I would say that the very best Peccattes probably have a slightly better spiccato/ricochet. All in all, for the different types of playing and repertoire I do, it probably scores the highest in my book." If you're not delighted with your purchase, return it for refund! You'll make somebody else happy! There are no returns when you buy at auction. Most bows at auction have not even been repaired or simply unplayable so they cannot be tested. But I stand behind what I sell. Happy? You keep it. Not happy? You return it. Another cellist graded its play characteristics as follows: " ... a very good bow: Strong. Even. Balanced." Where do you get a 4500 USD French cello bow from the first quarter of the 20th century anywhere at this price, this condition, and with these play characteristics? Ans: You don't! It's not available elsewhere!Fine quality pernambuco. Silver mounts. Silver tip-plate. No damage to the stick or mounts. Play the bow. Experience it yourself! Length of bow including button: 71.5 cm Weight: 80.74 grams Full spec sheet on last photo gives you everything you need to know. Professionally packaged. PVC tube. Courier service. Free shipping on a domestic purchase. Strength: Strong, with no noticeable bend from side-to-side and in the camber. Spiccato: Excellent with a crisp sound. Spiccato was played closer to the middle of the bow, away from the hand. Comfortability: Comfortable and well balanced. The bow weighs 81.6 grams, well within the weight range of a standard cello bow. Ease of playing: Easy to play with consideration to the camber. Camber: The bow follows the camber and is even throughout the draw. Full Sound: Throughout the bow it provides you with a full sound. Pairs nicely with a cello of great sound production. Depth: Capable of producing rich, nuanced sounds. Any perceived lack of strength, which doesn't exist in reality, is compensated through its capabilities and varieties of texture and sound. Eras: Suited for all eras. Recommended for Baroque, Classical, and Romantic works that require dramatic changes in dynamic. Comments: This bow is excellent for light and quick bow work - well suited for techniques like ricochet or sautille. Easy to handle when cycling through quick changes of bow techniques or volume. Player's Feeling: "Though perhaps not as flashy as high-end cello bows, but it has a wealth of nuance. It's strong and reliable." Currently the bow is with my luthier, James Banicki Violins, in Essex Junction, Vermont. So, if you’re near the vicinity, call and make an appointment and try out the bow. Let me know if you have any questions.
