Description: Rare Childs Spongeware Stencil Miniature Toy Plate Backpacker Adventurer Hiking Creil-Montereau, France c1920 This is a rare doll toy spongeware plate, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The plate measures 4 inches across. The plate feature a backpacker or hiking explorer. The image is stenciled in bright yellow-orange with black detailing, and the rim of the plate is decorated with black sponged paint. The pattern is referred to in English as THE EXPLORER. Part of a set made Montereau (formerly and subsequently Creil-Montereau), one of the faienceries in France. The plate is marked with an impressed 1D. The image is based on the adventures of Tartarin de Tarascon, a comical, bumbling, curious rambler of French folklore. The plate is great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Light overall crazing consistent with age. This little piece was impeccably potted and the stencil was applied with a good deal of attention to detail. Children's spongeware or spatter ware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The image of the hiker is simple and delightful.
