Description: Enhance your outdoor space with the addition of a thoughtfully crafted gargoyle statue. This modestly sized sculpture (9"h x 7'w x 8"d) is versatile enough to grace your roof, porch, balcony, fence, flower bed, or even find a place of honor inside your home. Meticulously crafted from stone and cement, it undergoes a process of base painting, detailed hand painting, and a final coat of clear matte finish, ensuring its resilience against the elements. Introduce a touch of the untamed into your living space or garden with the presence of this unassuming yet bold creature. The history of gargoyles as protective figures dates back to medieval times, primarily in European architecture, particularly in Gothic cathedrals. Gargoyles are often depicted as grotesque, fantastical creatures with open mouths, often serving as waterspouts to divert rainwater away from the sides of buildings. While their primary function was architectural, serving a practical purpose in directing rainwater, over time, they also acquired symbolic and spiritual significance. Here are some key points about the history of gargoyle protection: Medieval Symbolism:Gargoyles became prevalent in medieval architecture during the 12th century and reached the height of popularity in the Gothic era. They were not only functional but were also believed to have protective qualities. Many of these figures were designed to represent mythical creatures, animals, or even demonic beings. Warding off Evil:In medieval Christian belief, gargoyles were thought to have protective qualities against evil spirits. The grotesque and fearsome appearance of gargoyles was believed to frighten away malevolent forces, acting as guardians for the sacred spaces they adorned. Spiritual Significance:Some interpretations suggest that gargoyles served a dual purpose, not only protecting buildings from physical damage caused by rainwater but also safeguarding the spiritual sanctity of the structures. They were seen as guardians of the faith, watching over churches and cathedrals. Architectural Expression:Gargoyles were not limited to churches; they also adorned castles and other medieval structures. The intricate details and unique designs of gargoyles allowed artisans and builders to showcase their craftsmanship while incorporating a functional aspect into the architecture. Cultural Evolution:As time progressed, the symbolism of gargoyles evolved. While initially associated with Christianity, gargoyles later found their way into popular culture, literature, and even modern architecture. They are often depicted in popular media as protectors against supernatural threats. Modern Interpretations:Today, gargoyles continue to be a popular decorative element, both in architecture and as standalone art pieces. While the belief in their protective qualities has diminished, their historical significance and intricate designs make them enduring symbols of medieval art and craftsmanship. Gargoyles have a rich history rooted in medieval architecture, where they served a dual purpose of diverting rainwater and symbolically guarding against evil spirits. Their enduring presence in popular culture and architecture reflects the lasting impact of these fantastical creatures on our collective imagination. The fine print: I started making these statues because I couldn't find any "solid" statues online that I liked at a reasonable price, they all seem to be made of lightweight poly resin (plastic). This is understandable because shipping one of these heavy beasts anywhere in the US is half the price posted, and then there's ebay fees. I'm not expecting to make money or break even on any of the material costs and time it took to make these. I'm simply looking to unload my original iterations as I try and improve my ability to create a final version for my own use (I have some 8" cinder block pillars around the house). My motivation also stems from an old, about 2ft gargoyle (Bob), weathered and made of plaster that I picked up decades ago and set on my roof. The house has survived a raging fire in the area which came within 6ft of the house and multiple large fallen trees, Redwood and Madrone. Not saying there's a connection, I just like to think there might be. Also, much love to the local volunteer firefighters who actually did save our house from burning to the ground. Any who, if you have actually read this far, well, thank you for your time and interest. Ideas and suggestions are welcome.
