Description: Argyll Etkin Ltd GB OFFICIAL DOMINIONS OFFICE SECRETARY OF STATE COLONIAL OFFICE CW 1925-1948 Handstamps used on official mail by 1925 Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs. A British cabinet-level position created in 1925 responsible for British relations with the dominions – Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland and the Irish Free State – and the self governing Crown colony of Southern Rhodesia. When initially created, the office was held in tandem with that of Secretary of State for the Colonies. The first Secretary of State was RT Hon Leo Amery MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook. Further office holders included Malcolm McDonald, MP for Ross and Cromarty (1935-1939) Anthony Eden MP for Warwick and Leamington (1939-40) and Clement Attlee (1942-43) MP for Limehouse. The last office holder was Viscount Addison from 1945 to 1947 who became the first Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations which was the new name of the department which sustained until 1966 when the department was merged with Foreign affairs so that from 1966 it became one department of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs run by a single Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. The five handstamps chronicling this important period are from a ledger of essays and specimens of certifying handstamps for British official mail (1901-1904).
