ZABRISKIE: George Albert Zabriskie (1868-1954) was the son of John Albert and Martha Lyon (Knox) Zabriskie, and a descendent of Albert Zabriskie who came from Poland in 1662 to settle in New Amsterdam. He was associated with the Pillsbury Flour Mills Co. and served as a director of the Columbia Baking Co. He became a life member of The New-York Historical Society in 1920, was elected treasurer in 1929, and ten years later was chosen president, an office he held until 1947. He was known for his summer and winter residences: "The Doldrums" at 201 Ocean South Blvd Ormand Beach, FL (now on the National Register of Historic Places); and “Cliffdale,” a big 1911 estate on the Palisades in Alpine NJ, whose two-story foundation ruins still intrigue hikers who come upon them along the Long Path. He also maintained an address on Central Park South in NYC. Some of the most unique bindings in the New-York Historical Society Library can be found among the books donated by former Historical Society president George Albert Zabriskie (1868-1954). A man with a number of hobbies and a fascinating architectural legacy, Zabriskie’s books are an incredible example of bookbinding as its own exceptional art form. (Click here for more on Zabriskie’s home, Cliff Dale.) Having been an executive for the Pillsbury Flour Mills Co. and the Columbia Baking Co., as well as the sugar and flour administrator during World War I, it is Zabriskie’s personal interests and talent that is of pique interest here. Zabriskie was an avid book and art collector, who extended his passion for collecting books into creating them, by being binding finisher and sometimes author. As president of the Historical Society, he donated many of his own personal books with these exceptional bindings to the Library. CLEVELAND A. DUNN 1956B OBITUARY: Cleveland Arthur Dunn of the Northgate, a Scarsdale elder statesman, one of the founders in 1913 of Scarsdale’s selective non-partisan government system, and the recipient in 1944 of the village's highest honor, "The Scarsdale Bowl," died on July 22 at his summer home in Haines Falls after a brief illness. Mr. Dunn, who was 83 years old, had retired in 1942 as vice president, treasurer, and chief executive officer of Graff, Washbourne & Dunn, a firm of silversmiths which he had organized in NYC in 1899. Born on Dec. 5, 1872 in New York, Mr. Dunn was the son of Gen. N. Gano and Amelia Sillick Dunn, both of American ancestry dating back to 1629. He was married in 1896 to Jennie E. Haines of Haines Falls, who died several years ago. A resident of Scarsdale for more than half a century, he was a life member and twice president of the Town Club here, and a member of the Church of St. James the Less. An early member, and president, of Scarsdale Fire Co. No. 1, Mr. Dunn was instrumental in the incorporation of the fire department, and later of the police department, into the village government. He was also active in the formation of the village’s first zoning laws and was chairman of a committee which negotiated the contract with the Westchester Lighting Co. which first brought gas to Scarsdale. In New York, Mr. Dunn a former trustee, was active in the affairs of the Park Avenue Methodist Church. In recent years he had withdrawn from all of his clubs except the Town | Club of Scarsdale and the Sons of the Revolution. The achievements from which he received most personal satisfaction were the Bowery Branch of the YMCA in New York, and his share in the establishment of Scarsdale’s selective non-partisan government system. Also, as chairman of the Town Club’s committee on local history, he collected (much data which he honed would (be used in a published volume, and which did become some of the (background material for the Town j Club’s publication of the history (of the village written by Harry Hansen. BY BIDDING ON OR PURCHASING THIS ITEM, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING SELLER TERMS: 1) COMBINED SHIPPING/POSTAGE: I happily combine shipping where possible, but orders over $10 will require tracking now because of Postal Service delays. Tracking/delivery confirmation speeds up shipments. DUE TO LIMITATIONS OF THE EBAY PLATFORM, THERE IS NOW ONLY ONE WAY TO RECEIVE ANY POSSIBLE DISCOUNTS FOR COMBINED SHIPPING CHARGES ON MULTIPLE ONE-DAY PURCHASES, both Auction and Buy-It-Now formats. There are no longer Ebay refunds for postage once payment has been made: a. Auction Purchases: Wait for combined shipping invoice on multiple auction wins prior to payment. This may take up to a day based on my schedule, and does not affect your prompt payment status. The message line of the invoice will reflect that the postage has been combined. b. Buy-It-Now Purchases: If you plan to buy more than one item from me, add them to your shopping cart on a computer (not a phone or tablet), DO NOT USE BUY IT NOW BUTTON. Once you're completed adding to your cart from my listings, go to the shopping cart and click on the button at top of cart page that says "Request Total From Seller." You will be prompted to commit to the purchases, at which point nobody else will be able to buy them. A notice will be sent to me to package your items together and combine your shipping charges as much as possible, and send a hopefully reduced invoice. This may take up to a day, depending on my schedule. c. International Buyers: You must be logged in to the US eBay site (www.ebay.com) in order to use the shopping cart to request combined shipping invoice. Log out of your country specific eBay and log in at the US site. Note: listings using the eBay Global Shipping program are not subject to combined shipping. d. No refunds will be made for those who cannot wait for a combined invoice. Please don't bid/buy if you don't agree to this. 2) POSTAGE: All USPS postage rates are calculated using the most affordable (not the quickest) shipping class, based on a pre-sale estimated weight and size of the package. If you want to upgrade to a quicker, more expensive postal class, you must let me know BEFORE you pay. 3) SALES TAX: Ebay has taken over all duties for sales tax collection for all states that require it. I have no control whatsoever over who pays sales tax, it is out of my hands. Please direct all questions/complaints to the good folks at Ebay. 4) INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws. 5) REPRODUCTION OF IMAGES: Seller is not selling the exclusive rights to reproduce images of the item offered. Seller retains and may exercise the right to reproduce any images of the item for any purpose before or after the sale, without compensation to the buyer. 6) LISTING DISCREPANCIES If the Title, Description, and/or Photo on a listing do not match, for gosh sakes don't buy it.
