Description: A pleasant impressionist oil painting of Provincetown Harbor by American artist George Oberteuffer (1878-1940). Oberteuffer was born in Philadelphia, studied at Princeton and after graduation, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase, and received his Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. He then moved to Paris where he lived until 1920, married a French painter Henrietta Amiard and became a member of the Salon D’Automne and the Salon des Independents. He painted primarily landscapes and taught at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere for a short time. Upon his return to the United States, he taught at various art schools including Milwaukee Art Institute, Pennsylvania Academy, Chicago Art Institute, Grand Central School of Art, Minneapolis Museum School, and the Memphis Academy. In 1926, he was also hired as the first teacher for the North Shore Art League. He exhibited from the 1910s- 1930s, and a joint exhibition of his work, his wife’s work, as well as his son, was held in 1940 at the Vose Galleries in Boston.
