Description: Knowing that his health was declining, George Quaintance decided to sell Rancho Siesta and move back to Los Angeles. Once there, his interests turned to the gods. In quick succession he painted Vulcan (aka Zeus), Bacchant, Falconer and Hercules. Norse mythology was next. He hired Dick Dubois (1954 Mr. America and 1957 Mr. USA), to pose for a new painting. Dubois was the golden boy of the day, with his face and physique on billboards, advertisements and magazines across the continent. He even toured with Mae West as part of her stage show. A full-page photo of Dubois appears on page 11 of this issue and an ad for Quaintance's set of 12 greeting cards is on p. 27. Quaintance described the forthcoming painting as his masterpiece, but he died before he could finish it. A sketch for that painting, "Odin Welcoming the Slain Heroes into Valhalla," became the cover of Vol. 8, No. 3 (Fall 1958) of Physique Pictorial. It was Quaintance's final cover for that magazine. This is a mint copy; 32 pages.
