First published in book form in 1870 from its serialized publication in 1857-58. Worldcat also locates an "1870s" edition published in NY by Robert M. De Witt (one copy at Northern Illinois University) but we still think our edition may viably be called the first American edition. Reynolds was a prolific author of "penny dreadfuls," a radical Chartist, and a journalist who exposed London's huge problems with child labor, residential squalor, etc. This was the second-to-last novel he published.
