Description: This antique, hardcover book titled "Germany Seen Without Spectacles" by Henry Ruggles was published by Lee and Shepard in Boston. The book was written, in part, to offset some of the negative commentary of visitors to America (described in the Introductory section). and has not been signed or personalized. It is a collection of sketches of a traveler to Germany in the later 1800s. The book is in good shape, given its age. The binding is intact. At both the front and back endpapers there is the beginnings of a crack; however, neither is a full crack (see photos). The pages are clean and all are free of tears except for 2 pages that have the upper corner missing. In addition, the first 3 pages have been “nibbled” at the upper corner (see photo). The cover has wear consistent for its age (mainly around the edges of the spine). This is a wonderful book that helps to give the reader a sense of what German society was like at the later 1800s.
