You are bidding on a small packet ( 1" x 1 1/2" ) of GIANT PUFFBALL MUSHROOM SPORES - Calvatia gigantea . Giant puffball mushrooms are said to be some of the most tasty and fun to cook mushrooms found in the woods. In the Northeast, they commonly grow in the early fall (August — September) on the edge of forests, in open woods, grassy fields, parks and meadows. It is not unusual to find them growing in fairy rings or as single specimens. These are found in meadows, fields, and deciduous forests usually in late summer and autumn. It is found in temperate areas throughout the world. Most giant puffballs grow to be 10 to 70 centimeters (3.9 to 27.6 in) in diameter, although occasionally some can reach diameters up to 150 centimeters (59 in) and weights of 20 kilograms (44 lb). The largest ever recorded giant puffball was eight feet, eight inches in diameter and weighed forty-eight pounds . The inside of mature Giant puffballs is greenish brown, whereas the interior of immature puffballs is white. The large white mushrooms are edible when young. The fruiting body of a puffball mushroom will develop within the period of a few weeks and soon begin to decompose and rot, at which point it is dangerous to eat. Unlike most mushrooms, all the spores of the giant puffball are created inside the fruiting body; large specimens can easily contain several trillion spores. Spores are yellowish, smooth, and 3 to 5 micrometers (0.00012 to 0.00020 in) in size. Nutritional Value : A substance called calvacin was isolated from the Giant Puffball mushrooms, Calvatia gigantea, and was shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice. Ethnic/Cultural Info : Puffball mushrooms were used by Native Americans as a sort of coagulant to stop bleeding and to help prevent infection.
