Grisun, Romansh: Grischun, French: Grisons) is a canton in southeastern Switzerland. The canton of Grisons as a political entity originates from the union of three leagues - associations of communities, feudal estates and other small entities that arose in the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, Bishop Peter wanted to transfer secular power to the Austrian Habsburgs, but met opposition in the communities that rallied into an associated state - the Union of the House of God (Gotteshausbund). In the 15th century, for the defense against Austria, an "eternal friendly alliance" was concluded with the Swiss Union. In the XVI-XVII centuries Grisons suffered from the struggle of the parties: the Austrian - Catholic and the French - Reformed. In 1620, a civil war broke out, and the country would have fallen under the rule of Austria if the patriots, led by Georg Jenach, had not defended its independence. In 1798, Grisons was annexed by France, as the canton of Rezia, to the Helvetic Republic, which also included the territory of modern Switzerland. The people opposed this, turned to Austria for help; for several years the Graubünden served as a theater of war for the Austrian, French and Russian troops. After the publication in 1803 by Napoleon of the Act of Mediation, which established the political structure of Switzerland as a federal state under his supreme control, Graubünden became one of the Swiss cantons, retaining much of its former independence.
