They are battery operated and take 2 C size batteries (not included). I did test them and they do work as seen in the photos. The box does not say how long the strand is and I did not undo them just to take a picture. You can use them outside but not where they will get wet. Could be used in crafts also. The battery holder is cheaply made so just be careful with it when removing the lid and putting it back on. Any questions just message me. Thanks for looking.
