Perkins. I have always had both a love of nature and an admiration for the beauty of natural wood and wood grain. This led my wife and I many years ago to buy a few acres of land in northern Wisconsin that was rather remote and bordered thousand of acres of public forest land. We spent many hours wondering the area enjoying everything that nature has to offer. To increase our comfort over a tent, we built a very small, one room cabin that is off grid and requires a minimum of effort to maintain. The story of the Yellow Birch continues: As with the stools that I made, these lamps are made from the yellow birch that was becoming a hazard because it was overhanging my remote cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin. Being such a beautiful tree with such interesting wood grain and bark, it would have been an absolute shame to use this tree for firewood. These lamps are another way for me to honor this majestic tree by letting it continue on in the enjoyment of someones home or cabin. Just like with the stools, I used almost no power tools in the creation of these lamps except for the chainsaw that I used to take the tree down. Each piece was cut with a hand saw and all holes were made with a hand brace and bits. Every smooth surface was hand sanded. Each piece is numbered and signed and there will be very limited production. I dont want to needlessly remove trees from my woodland but each year one or two need to be removed for either safety reasons or for the health of the surrounding tree. The prettier trees will be used for creations like these and as little as possible will be used as firewood.
