Description: Gouache on board painting, 10" by 16" image with 1" margins, unframed, signed at lower left by well-listed, often-auctioned California artist HARRY CASSIE BEST (1863-1936), the work featuring an unusual subject for the artist, an Italian scene---the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the distance. I do no see any information regarding Best having made any trips to Italy, so this could be a work resulting from the artist's having seen prints or original works depicting the famous Italian vista. Hughes in his ARTISTS IN CALIFORNIA wrote that Best, the brother of artist Arthur Best, was born in Canada and found himself in Oregon by the late 1880's. Soon he and his brother were in San Francisco, where they became established and successful, President Theodore Roosevelt having purchased a landscape by 1907. Condition: This came out of a portfolio of unframed art. Considering that it has been unprotected, it is in good condition, with the exception of a flaking area in the tall tree at right and a little possible instability in the clouds. Once stabilized, the painting will be ready for framing and matting at which point it will make a fine addition to a collection.
