Harry Finney(19th/20th Century) 20th Century Pennsylvania artist best known for Portraits, landscapes, figures and seascape paintings. Original signed oil painting on canvas Created in 1940 Inscribed "To Dorothy", signed and dated lower left--see photos Canvas: 31.25"x 25" Frame: 41.5"x 35.5" Looks very good, in "as found" original condition, edge wear, small ding upper center, minor waves in canvas, minor surface abrasions, frame has wear--please look at photos carefully. Fantastic composition by Harry Finney! This painting depicts a portrait of a fashionable young 1940s socialite cradling a little white dog. Finney was known for his portrait paintings. This is a fine example of his work in good condition for its age and with a quality gold frame. My price of $1299 is extremely reasonable and far below what one would be expected to pay for it in a gallery or at auction. Please check out the other artwork in our store on ebay. We regularly feature newly acquired artwork, from antique and vintage to contemporary and modern. Select the "See other items" tab on our page. Harry Finney, Art Student, Paris; exhibitor in Salon of 1891, former Teacher Spring Garden Institute.Champs Elysees SalonSome Excellent Paintings Displayed and Many American Artists. Paris, April 25: Harry Finney of Philadelphia, comes well to the front with a large canvas entitled The Feast of Flowers. An elegantly dresses Parisian lady is depicted in an open caliche, as she drives along an avenue in the Bois de Boulogne; at her back is a beautiful mass of blooming roses; she is represented in the act of casting flowers with her gloved hand as the carriage proceeds. There is no attempt at finical painting, the features are firmly rendered; the lovely costume is fresh from Worth, and the whole is as fine a sample of artistic workmanship as can be found int his year’s Salon. The Philadelphia Inquirer (Newspaper) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 26 Apr 1891.After two years of pranks, puffing, and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy, the vision of a Paris garret was on its way to becoming a reality. With four fellow students name Charles Grafly, Harry Finney, J.R. Fisher, and William Hefeker, Henri booked passage from New York, and on September 5, 1888, the five found themselves lining the rail, ocean-bound, taking their last strained glimpse of America. Henri’s disinterest in the Julian classes was far from unique. Of the other Americans, Harry Finney, for example, had already forsaken he insipid instruction of Bouguereau, preferring instead to try his hand at portrait painting on the fashionable Right Bank. Painters of the Ashcan School: The Immortal Eight by Bennard B. Perlman. Philadelphia Artists at the Paris Salon. Most pleasing is the picture by Mr. Harry Finney, another talented Philadelphian, whose last year’s painting, “La Fete des Fleurs,” was so much admired.Mr. Finney is by no means imbued with “Classicism;” he does not waste his time in, as the French say “seeking noon at 14 o’clock.” He believes that the features of a beautiful living woman are more worthy of perpetuation on canvas than those of an ideal goddess, and leaves to others the painting of hackneyed Minervas and Dianas. This year’s picture, which he entitles Chagrin d’Amour, (pictured) represents a most beautiful woman, seated pensively on a stone bench in a sunny flower-covered park, brooding over her heart troubles. To tell the truth, she does not seem to suffer immoderately; her complexion has not lost its rosy charm, nor her eye its brightness, nor has she neglected the slightest detail of her faultless toilette. Taken all in all she is much more calculated to produce “chagrins d’amour’ in the hearts of her masculine beholders than to provoke sympathy for her own but “The wound’s invisible – That love’s keen arrows make.”The Philadelphia Inquirer (Newspaper) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 17 Apr 1892.
