Description: Huge original antique engraving print from an 1860s illustrated journal. It depicts the 5-person crews (4 rowers and COxman) in the International University Boat Race held on The Championship Course of the River Thames (between Mortlake and Putney in London, made famous by the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race). In April 1869 the Harvard University Boat Club challenged the Oxford University Boat Club to an "International University Boat-Race" of coxed fours on the Boat Race course. The race took place on 27 August 1869 and was narrowly won by Oxford. The new Atlantic cable allowed daily reports to be received by all major newspapers across America within 23 minutes of the finish. U.S. public interest in the event was huge, with more publicity than any sporting event to date, and within two years of the event the "newly awakened interest in rowing at many of the most noted seats of learning" doubled the number of boat clubs in the US, and led to the formation of the Rowing Association of American Colleges.The print has the portraits and person's name in black surrounded by ornate framing. It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately 22 x 16 inches (56 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There is unrelated text/photos on the back of this print.The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. PLEASE NOTE the fold line has holds and tears, so you may widh to separate them for framing. THere is a small smudge marks in the bottom white margin that could be trimmed.
