Description: Pergamon, Mysia | AE16 Reference: SNG Aulock 1373 Date: 200-113 BCE Obverse: Laureate head of Aesclepios Reverse: ΑΣΚΛΗΠΙΟΥ / ΣΩΤΗΡoΣ, serpent-entwined staff of Aesclepios. Mint: Pergamon, Mysia Size: 16.3 mm Weight: 3.64 grams SNAKE CULT. While initially a vassal of the Seleucid Empire, the Kingdom of Pergamon eventually became an independent entity who was a perpetual thorn in the side of the Seleucids for much of the second and third centuries BCE. As a final middle finger to the Seleucids, the last Attalid king, Attalus III bequeathed his entire kingdom to the Roman Republic, who formally annexed the kingdom in 129 BCE. In western Anatolia, snakes and the concept of healing were intertwined with each other; and Pergamon was home to a large temple to Aesclepios. These facts are advertised on this coin with the portrayal of Aesclepios and his famous snake-staff. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
