HENRI MATISSE was also the creator of FAUVISM (literally, "Wild Beasts") a wild, uninhibited style espousing great liberation and joyfulness. Proponents of Fauvism in the early to mid-20th century include ANDRE DERAIN and the two French painter brothers, RAOUL DUFY and JEAN DUFY. Henri Matisse is considered to be one of France's greatest and most beloved artists.THE INK DRAWING This UNIQUE ink line work from the mid-1930s is signed in ink, by hand. It is a FAUVIST INK DRAWING on a light-tan paper. It depicts a LOVELY LADY... beautifully executed in Matisse's unique flowing ink lines. The paper view-size measures: 9 1/2" x 7 3/4" (24 1/2 cm x 19 1/2 cm). In a beautiful arabesque-patterned wood frame that measures: 18 1/4" x 16 1/8" (49 1/2 cm x 41 cm). The drawing is INK-SIGNED, in the lower-left: Henri Matisse. With a penciled date annotated on the VERSO: 1935 Also on the VERSO, a gallery STAMP (very faint) that is from the Arthur Tooth Gallery, a well-known gallery in England in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
