An authority on early military uniforms, Ogden illustrated Uniforms of the United States Army, Regulations for the Uniform of the Army of the United States, and The Pageant of America. From AskArt, "A pre-eminent painter of Colonial domestic and social life, he is especially known for his acurate depictions of colonial dress, uniforms, customs and architecture.Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 17, 1856, he graduated from Brooklyn High School, attended the Brooklyn Institute, Brooklyn Academy of Design, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. Ogden began working at age 17 for Leslie's Illustrated Magazine as a staff artist and in 1881 he started working for Strobridge Lithography Company of Cincinnati from which he retired in 1932. The Quartermaster General of the U.S. under the authority of the Secretary of War commissioned Ogden to provide paintings of U.S. Army uniforms from pre-revolution to present times. He provided 44 plates of uniforms which appeared in 1890 in Uniforms of the US. Army by H.A. Ogden, with a reprint in 1959 by Sagamore Press."
