HENRY GEORGE EARL GREY III - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 02/07/1851 - HFSID 23780 HENRY GREY (EARL GREY III) His signed autograph letter as Colonial Secretary (1851), telling a friend that the Treasury has accepted Grey's recommendation to continue funding the Toronto Observatory. Autograph Letter signed: "Grey", 2 pages, 8¾x7 (front and verso). Colonial Office, 1851 February 7. To "Dear Dr. Holland", marked by him "Private". In full: "I am happy to inform you that I have received the official assent of the Treasury to the continuance of the Toronto Observatory in which you take so much interest, & which I told you I had thoroughly recommended. I am sure you will be glad to hear that Lady Grey is getting well though very slowly. Yours faithfully". Henry Grey, the third Early Grey (1802-1894) was the son of the second Earl, Charles Grey, a Prime Minister and the man for whom the tea is named. Henry Grey entered Parliament as Viscount Howick in 1826, and became Under Secretary for War and Colonies in his father's government (1830-1834). He resigned in protest when slave emancipation was made gradual, not immediate. He was Secretary of War (1835-1839) and Colonial Secretary (1846-1852). In the latter office, he declared it his policy that the colonies were to be governed with their own interests paramount, not those of England, and he extended a greater degree of self-government. Grey held no public office after 1852, but wrote extensively, including books on parliamentary reform, the Irish question, and the US tariff. He was married to Maria, Lady Grey, daughter of Sir Joseph Copley, from 1832 until her death in 1879. Horizontal and vertical folds. Soiled and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
