In Eicher, the memoirs is accorded higher praise -- “Sheridan’s works constitutes a military classic with occasionally surprising literary content. In Coulter’s Travels in the Confederate States it is noted that “[i]n the Spring of 1864 [Sheridan] was transferred to the war in the East and put at the head of the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac ... [in which capacity] he won his greatest renown, defeating and killing Stuart at Yellow Tavern and later ravaging the Shenandoah Valley and scattering Early’s army.” (Nevins II, 88; Eichar (1972), 572; Coulter, 414).
