Because only heroes of uncommon valour, courage and purity could hope to subdue these monsters and emerge victorious, the images have an underlying moral and ethical implication. For Victorian parents the upbringing of their children was the most important responsibility. They believed that a child must know the difference between right and wrong in order to become a thoughtful, moral adult. SHEET#11. Each Player to pay to the Pool.2. SHEET #2 MANCHESIER " EXAMINER AND TIMEs," NOVEMBER 41H, 1858. If you are not alarmed at a pack of cards, good reader, pray turn your attention to those very pretty looking articles just published by Mr. Charles Henry, of our city, which are intended as the materials for a game entitled St. George and the Dragon; or, the Seven Champions of Christendom. The cards are most delicately engraved by Mr. Leeming, of Princess-street, and are coloured in good taste. There is elegance and neatness about them. They are so agreeable to look at that they tempt you to inquire into the nature of the game; and that you will find ingenious but simple, and not beyond the capacity of the little folks who are to gather round your Christmas hearth, or your Christmas table. To the poor weary invalid who has tried " chess" and " backgarmon," " draughts,' " or " beggar-my-neighbour, this game will be a novelty, and, we venture to think, a pleasant recreation. MANCHESTER " GUARDIAN," NOVEMBER 6TH, 1858. THE NEW GAME OF THE SEVEN CHamPIONS OF CHrISTENDOM Mr. Henry, of the Civet Cat, has taken advantage of the beginning of the long winter evenings, and the approach of merry Christmas holidays, to bring out a new round game under the title given above. It certainly possesses merits which claim notice, and these are the more to be appreciated because it has been devised, registered, and published in Manchester, by townsmen. MANCHESTER "COURIER," NOvEMBER 6TH, 1858. THE GAME OF ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON. This is an ingenious and harmless substitute for playing cards, to which many persons have conscientious objections. The cards are neatly executed, and bear tasteful designs of St. George, his brother knights, squires, ladies, &c. The game is creditable to Manchester invention and production, and is likely to become popular in families. MANCHESTER " ADVERTISER," NOvEMBER 6. 1858. ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, AND THE SEVEN CHAMPIOnS OF ChRIS-TENDOM. This is the name of an ingenious and amusing game for persons of all ages, and particularly for those who delight in genuine English fireside entertainment. Figures of the formidable dragon, the seven cham-pions, their ladies, their esquires, and other accessories, are very tastefully depicted on cards which are played, as in any round game; but in conformity with the directions which accompany each pack, from which it is easy. to perceive the game combines the most salient and entertaining features of ordinary round games of cards, united in the most novel manner with the spirit of chivalry and romance, and productive of infinite merriment. This game is published by Mr. C. Henry, of the Civet Cat, Market-street, and is the invention of a gentleman of this city. The illustrations are by Mr. Leeming, of Princess-street, on whose ability and taste they reflect the highest credit. We augur that this game will become very popular during the approaching festive season. Now Ready, and may be had of the Patentee, CHARLES HENRY, Civet Cat, 18, Market Street, Manchester. THE TRADE SUPPLIED. The rules of the game appear well designed to afford much fun both to young and old: and the cards used for playing it have been really very tastefully designed and executed by Mr. Leeming.
