Description: History and Antiquities of the Deanery of Craven in the County of York by Thomas Dunham Whitaker. This 655 page hardback book measures approx 13" x 10". It is the 1878 Third Edition published by Dodgson with Cassell. A magnificent book on part of the Yorkshire Dales in the old West Riding of Yorkshire. An extremely detailed history of each parish including histories for the main towns and villages within each parish. With family pedigrees with details of churches and clerics with their histories. See Title page and contents page for more details. There are numerous illustrations throughout including 61 plates and and 29 folding pedigrees. In addition are numerous further in-text illustrations Altogether a wonderful book on the area in this, supposedly, the best edition. In very good condition in lovely solid modern half leather binding with gilt to spine and additional end papers. In all other respects the book is as published in 1878. All the plates and pedigrees are present and correct. There is some minor spotting throughout the book though generally all is clean and tidy. Inevitably the folding pedigrees on thin paper have suffered some tearing and creasing though all are perfectly useable. One very large example had been torn from the book and has been much repaired with stamp hinges and, more recently with archive tape. See photo. It seems likely that the book has been little consulted since the re-bind and everything remains tight with sound hinges. There are no inscriptions.
