The Railroad was enticed to build a spur to the new logging boom town by the Brown family, and they named the city after the President of the railroad company, Frederick W. Rhinelander. The Hodag, a fictional animal photographed and distributed in 1896 by Eugene Sheppard. The character has become the mascot associated with Rhinelander.
