Biography: Medium: Lithograph Signature: Initialed in the lithographic Honor Daumier was a prolific painter, printmaker and caricaturist born in 1808 in Marseille, France. In 1822 Daumier studied under Alexandre Lenoir, an artist and archaeologist that was dedicated to saving French monuments during the French Revolution. One year later he went on to attend the Acadmie Suisse. His works are best known for commenting and critiquing on the 19th century social and political life in France. Honor Daumier's works can be found at the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum, and several other prominent collections internationally. Here an indigent man pleads with a lawyer to represent him out of kindness, of which Daumiers lawyer is surely lacking. The man seeking legal help offers only his ongoing gratitude in return. The lawyer responds by turning his back and, with his nose held in the air, snubs the poor mans request. Daumier apparently viewed the lawyers of his day as heartless and insensitive to people lacking the means to afford their services.
